The Civil War Monument

Standing tall in all of its glory is the Civil War Soldiers Monument. Located towards the northeast corner of Hope Cemetery, the monument provides lots of historical context involving Knox and Galesburg. The monument commerates GAR soldiers. "The GAR was composed of Civil War veterans, who were rejected by the Knox County Board when asked for monetary assistance" (Schock). They took matters into their own hands by hosting a raffle to raise money to fund the monument. A committee was appointed, and on October 7th, 1896, a parade occured celebrating the new monument. The parade was a joyous occasion for Galesburg, as Knox College cadets, members of the Illinois National Guard, and GAR posts from surrounding areas helped celebrate the day. Robert Todd Lincoln the only surviving son of the late President, gave the address and unvelied the pedestal. The monument provided a time for communities to come together and celebrate those who sacrificed their lives. Having an important figure like Lincoln speak, forever marks his stamp on Galesburg history. The monument serves as not only a way to honor soldiers, but as a way to give people a glimpse into Galesburg's rich history.
