The Carl Sandburg Home
Other than its location in Galesburg and its declaration as a state historical site, the Carl Sandburg Home does not pose a myth of its own but rather the myth comes from Carl Sandburg himself. The importance of the Carl Sandburg Home to Galesburg is the acknowledgment that it is the place of origin of Carl Sandburg's story.
He grew up with very little and struggled with math and science in school, but found a passion for writing at a young age, this passion allowed him to make an international name for himself and sparked his dream of a “People College.” He and his mentor, Professor Philip Green Wright of Lombard College, envisioned the establishment of a “People’s College.” They wanted the college to teach not only the basic curriculums of literature, science, music, art, etc but also something about industry and farming, such as agriculture, metalworking, bookbinding, etc. Carl Sandburg College is the embodiment of Sandburg's dreams.
Their mission is to provide all students with the opportunity to succeed and they have a vision for the college to be a place where dreams come to life and lives come to change, as Carl Sandburg’s dreams came true through the establishment of this college. This school stands as a continuous connection between Galesburg and the legacy of Carl Sandburg. All is possible because of the origin of Carl Sandburg in his home.
